Dreamwielder’s 10-Year Anniversary.

Dreamwielder will turn 10 in March, 2023 🤯

To celebrate, I’ll be hosting a series of promotions and giveaways

Read Dreamwielder again, gift the book to others, or discover it yourself for the first time

As always, I encourage you to buy local to support your local bookstore and community

Keep reading below for a retrospective on the book series so far, and what’s coming next

One of those Facebook memories popped up on my feed a few weeks back. It was a photo from the book launch party for my epic fantasy novel Dreamwielder. The first thing I noticed was how much thinner I was in the photo and how much less gray hair I had in my beard. The next thing I noticed was the date. The photo was from nearly 10 years ago, which couldn’t possibly be true, could it?

Garrett Calcaterra and friends at Dreamwielder’s launch
party with a cake sporting the novel’s original cover.

True it was. A quick bit of research showed that Dreamwielder was first published on March 5, 2013. It doesn’t feel nearly that long ago, but at the same time, a lot has happened in my life—and the world—since then.

I quickly followed up Dreamwielder with a sequel, Souldrifter, which came out two years after the first book, with newly designed covers for both books in the series and a change in the strategy from the publisher to start marketing it as a young adult (YA) novel rather than an all-ages fantasy adventure (more on that in a moment).

Around the same time, my long-time girlfriend, Mandy, and I got married and moved from southern California to the Bay Area. We had a baby. To make ends meet and ensure we had affordable health insurance, I changed careers, leaving behind teaching and freelancing to work full-time as a copywriter for a tech company. Then the pandemic hit.

I’ve been more fortunate than many. My family and I have maintained good health. I not only kept my job, but got promoted to Editorial Director at SpotOn where I now lead a team of five amazing writers for a company that genuinely cares about helping local businesses and their employees adapt to our changing world. It’s rewarding work. It’s gratifying to finally get paid what I feel I’m worth. But at the same time, it is demanding work.

Seeing that Facebook memory of Dreamwielder’s launch has brought into sharp focus how far apart the lofty expectations I had at the time are from the reality of where my novel writing career is 10 years later.

Dreamwielder got off to a strong start back in 2013 as an ebook only, quickly garnering a Nook First placement on Barnes & Noble’s website. Initially, sales were good enough for the publisher to invest in an Audible audiobook edition and a trade paperback edition—and for my agent to negotiate a deal for the sequel. I was full of confidence and optimism that my writing career was about to skyrocket.

Alas, I was very green in the world of self-marketing. I didn’t know how or where to start with promoting the book. While my work ethic was impeccable when it came to actual writing, I had put in very little effort when it came to connecting with other people within the broader science fiction and fantasy community. By time I finished writing and getting through edits of book two, Souldrifter, sales had dwindled to the point where the publisher, my agent, and I agreed that a new strategy was in order. Dreamwielder got a new cover treatment to match Souldrifter’s, and we put our efforts into marketing the series as YA titles. We secured a promotion with Wattpad, which was newly hot and growing in popularity with young readers. We gave Dreamwielder away for free on the site and I hosted a book-club style read along.

Dreamwielder quickly jumped in popularity on Wattpad, but giving it away for free never led to the corresponding boost in sales for book two that we were hoping for. And now here we are, seven years later.

Wulfram, a prequel short tale, was published in 2016.
Get it free here on the Downloads page or buy on Amazon.

Along the way, I abandoned the near-future cli-fi novel I was writing (because climate change caught up to us too fast and the book ceased to be science fiction). I’m a long way from finishing my steampunk/lost-world/fantasy novel I’ve been working on for years. And book three in The Dreamwielder Chronicles is little more than a rough outline and bunch disparate scenes in my imagination.

It’d be easy to feel disappointed that The Dreamwielder Chronicles didn’t turn into a runaway success like I hoped, but with age comes perspective, and the truth is I feel grateful—and hopeful.

Dreamwielder has sold well over 10,000 copies (print and ebook versions combined), which may not sound like a lot, but is actually a solid sales run for a debut novel. On Wattpad, the book has over 290,000 chapter views. It has a 4.1 star rating on Amazon and 3.92 star rating on Goodreads. Souldrifter is rated even better with 4.6 stars and 4.46, respectively. Add it all up, and a lot of people have read the books and generally like them. As an author, that’s all you can ask for.

And here’s a fun little secret: I’m far from done. I still have my best writing years ahead of me, and while I haven’t been writing much fiction over the last several years, I have been writing and editing on a daily basis for my day job. I’m excited for the future—both to get back to writing fiction and to celebrate Dreamwielder.

So please help me in spreading the word. Read The Dreamwielder Chronicles again, gift the books to loved ones for the holidays, or discover it yourself for the first time.

It's been a good long while since I've posted anything here, but the fine folks at a new site for readers called Shepherd (think an indy version of Goodreads that's more reader- and author-friendly) asked me to write my own unique book recommendation list and I was more than happy to oblige.

My list is titled "The best fantasy novels with storyteller voices that reach out and grab you" and is, as the title suggests, a list of my top-5 favorite fantasy books with rich storyteller voices that aren't afraid to take control of the narrative. It was tough limiting it to only 5, but those were the rules!

Disagree with my picks? Let's hear your favorites.
Garrett Calcaterratag:garrettcalcaterra.com,2005:Post/59874532019-12-01T14:49:53-08:002020-12-22T18:58:00-08:00Holiday Shopping Guide
Once again, the holidays are encroaching upon us, and this time around we're hurtling headlong into a brand new decade. I'd like to thank all my readers, friends, and family for their support through the 2010's. I'm looking forward to having a more productive decade starting in 2020, with even better books for everyone to read, but in the meantime, happy holidays! Here are a couple of gift suggestions from yours truly for the loved ones in your life.

I wish I could say it's because I've been head-down finishing up work on a pair of new books, but, alas, I've been consumed with other responsibilities. Long story short, being a parent of a toddler has made it harder to be a productive fiction writer than I anticipated, and over the last year, I've made little progress on that front. I know that's going to disappoint readers, but so life goes. I'll get back on track eventually, and in the meantime, I have a couple of little nuggets to hopefully keep people from forgetting I exist, starting with a free spooky October read!

Get Lake Town Free

Back in June of 2018, I pledged to donate all proceeds from my novella Lake Town to charities supporting immigrant rights. I made good on that pledge by donating my first royalty check to #FamiliesBelongTogether charities, but it took me a while to finalize the second half of my promise and independently release Lake Town so no one needs to purchase it from the original publisher (and it's bigoted editor who has publically supported separating and detaining immigrant families).

I'm glad to say that I've finally fulfilled the second half of my promise. The book is now available on its own, and available for free! You can download it right here on my website from the Downloads page, or find the Kindle version on Amazon, where it's free through Saturday, October 5, 2019. The story is spooky and more than a little twisted—perfect for a pre-Halloween read.

Beyond Lake Town, what have I been up to? Here's a quick rundown:

The Dreamwielder Chronicles

Zero, zilch, nada. Book 3 of the series is not under contract, meaning I have no deadline for it, and with little time to spare for writing at all, I simply haven't worked on the final chapter of Makarria, Caile, and the rest of the Dreamwielder crew.

The Beasts of Qaza (working title)

I actually have made a little bit of progress on my dino-punk novel and received my first rounds of feedback from my two writing groups on chapters 1 - 3. Having said that, it's slow going and I'm a long ways off from finishing.

Remember the Future

Long time readers of my blog know that I shelved this cli-fi work-in-progress several years ago. But...after rereading the opening chapters a few months ago, I realized that portions of it could be adapted into a short story or novelette. I've made good headway on that front and almost finished, with only the last scene to write to finish it off. I hope to do just that over the next couple of weeks and then focus primarily on finishing my dino-punk novel.

ProNowHow.com

Most of my waking hours are spent working at my day job, and while I'm finally getting paid well, the Bay Area ain't cheap, and living for years on a freelancer's income, not to mention having a hefty hospital bill from having a baby, have left my partner and I with lots of bills and little discretionary income. So yeah, we started a side project, ProNowHow.com, a site dedicated to how-to articles and do-it-yourself projects. The site is still very much in its infancy, but we hope to build it up over time and hopefully generate a little residual income for the long-term.

Wheel House

The band I play in (also with my wife), has actually been quite active, playing regularly over the last year and even getting back to writing new songs. In face, we have a new song, "I Wonder," which should be released in the coming months. As far as live performance, our favorite show over the last six months was in San Francisco at The Utah. You can check out a clip of our performance below. Otherwise, that's all from me for the time being. Hopefully I'll be more productive and have updates on a more frequent basis through the winter. Cheers!

Attending this convention has become an annual tradition for me, in part because it's local and feasible for me to attend without extensive travel arrangements, but largely because it's such a fantastic convention. FOGcon always has a warm, welcoming environment, and the organizers make a point of featuring a diverse range of voices. Every year I attend, I'm sure learn more from the other panelists and presenters than whatever it is I contribute. As such, I always feel honored to take part in the convention.

This year I'll be on two panel discussions.

In The Dark Times
Friday, March 8, 3 - 4:15 PM
With Laura Blackwell, Becky Chambers, Elizabeth Forest, and Bradford Lyau

What is a literature for the dark times? 10 years ago, dystopias seemed to make sense, calling attention to widening inequality, as did political movements such as Occupy. Now, however, the filters are off, and many readers are members of the precariat, as well as being aware of the violence that underlies our way of life. So what does this mean for science fiction? In some of Ursula K. LeGuin's fiction she writes of societies that for the most part meet human needs and she explores the stories that would take place in those worlds. Is this a productive direction for writers, or just another way of putting our heads in the sand?

What does it take to imagine new worlds -- and, just as important, how to convey their newness and difference? How can you make your stories rich with enough detail to give your readers the sense of alien/fantastical "place", including how it works and how it differs from our own?

Since we often need music to play in between sets during our live shows, I've been curating a playlist of lesser-known bands that fit the same retro rock/blues/funk vibe that Wheel House plays. And, hey, fans of the ban have been digging it!

That made me realize that I actually have several Spotify playlists people might enjoy, including a massive fantasy playlist I listen to when I'm writing. If there are any that suit your fancy, please follow and listen. Full listing of my various playlists below with links.

Garrett Calcaterratag:garrettcalcaterra.com,2005:Post/54289762018-09-14T11:55:15-07:002018-09-14T11:56:14-07:00News on My Backlist Titles
It's odd how certain events align themselves in our lives. Last month was one of those occasions for me, as I received word that not one, but two of my older books are going out of print: Umbral Visions and The Roads to Baldairn Motte. It's a sad turn of events, but hardly surprising. Neither title has sold well in the last couple of years, and seeing as how they were both published by small presses, the costs of keeping the books of available simply didn't make financial sense for the publishers.

With The Roads to Baldairn Motte, this is the second time it's gone out of print, and like a cat with nine lives, it simply refuses to die! That's right, the book will be re-released in its third incarnation from Knight Owl Publishing in the coming months with yet a new cover design, which you can see a preview of below. I'll have more details as we get closer to the release date, including print availability. Make sure to subscribe to my mailing list for advanced notice.

It's filled me with rage, disgust, and a sense of powerlessness.

Equally disgusting has been witnessing the slew of Americans justifying or otherwise rationalizing that separating parents from their children simply for fleeing dangerous situations in their home countries is somehow okay. It is morally reprehensible, and I will not associate with anyone who voices those opinions.

That includes the editor/publisher of a moderately popular anthology that I have story published in. I won’t name the editor because I have no desire to give them free publicity, but when I saw this editor write multiple social media posts justifying separating families, I knew there was something I could do about that.

I immediately contacted Amazon to have the book removed from my author profile, and I removed all references to the publication in my marketing material. I will take no part in promoting the book or helping a bigot gain financially from my work.

I’m donating all my royalty shares from the anthology to charity to help end the President’s zero tolerance border crossing policy and also reunite families. This includes past royalties I’ve already received, as well as any future royalties. Granted, it’s not much, but it’s what I can afford to do at the moment, and even as a symbolic gesture, it’s an important one.

I will independently publish a free ebook version of my story that’s included in the anthology (second printing rights have reverted back to me). That will enable readers to access it without having to purchase the anthology.

As I mentioned in point 2 above, all of these are largely symbolic gestures, but that is largely the point. As a society, it’s important that we speak out against hate and intolerance, and then take whatever direct action we are individually able to. As a writer, this is what I can do: I can speak out, I can spread the word, and I can contribute a small financial sum to support people doing the hard work.

If you can do more, great, do it. There’s a call for immigration lawyers who can do pro-bono work. Familiesbelongtogether.org is organizing protests nationwide on June 30th. There’s a #ProtestICE movement if you want to participate in locking down every local ICE center across the nation (more info in this Twitter thread, and make sure you know the risks involved in this sort of protest). If you can donate money, this Slate article has a listing of worthy charities doing good work.

Do what you can and don’t stop until the President is gone, his cabinet is gone, ICE is dismantled, and those 2,000+ children are reunited with their families. #FamiliesBelongTogether

Over the nine years since launching the blog, I’ve written 143 posts (minus three or four, which my intern wrote), and all those posts have been hosted at http://garrettcalcaterra.blogspot.com, a freebie Blogger account. At long last, I’m migrating my blogging efforts here, to my official website.

By that, I mean that all new blog posts will be posted here at www.garrettcalcaterra.com. I don’t have the time or energy to do all the work it’d take to migrate the posts from the old Blogger site (and I’m not so mean as to ask my intern to do it), but I will maintain that old site as an archive.

To commemorate the transition, here’s an index of the best posts I created at the old site, with direct links to the posts. Please enjoy, and be on the lookout for new, regular content here!
